The Practical Test

The standard driving test lasts about 40 minutes. To pass your driving test, the driving examiner is looking to see if you can (a) drive safely, and (b) demonstrate knowledge of the Highway Code through your driving.

The test first involves an eyesight check, for which you are required to read a car number plate from a distance of 20 metres (new style plates) and 20.5 metres (old style plates).

For your driving, you will be examined on your general driving ability and on two manoeuvres selected from reversing around a corner, turn in the road, reverse bay parking and reverse parallel parking. You may also be required to carry out an emergency stop exercise.

Throughout the test the examiner will give you route directions in plenty of time. Test routes will include a variety of roads and traffic conditions, from town centre roads to dual carriageways. The examiner will ask you to perform the set manoeuvre exercises at suitable locations on the route.

In addition to the above, you will also be asked two vehicle safety check questions, one "show me" and one "tell me". Some checks will involve opening the bonnet of the car to identify where fluid levels would be checked. These vehicle checks are covered during your tuition with Delta where you will receive comprehensive training.
